Event Details

Four leading historians and historical novelists come together to discuss how and why they write about history. An initial panel discussion will explore the differences between history and historical fiction, the importance of research, and the personal stories behind the books. This will be followed by four smaller “book group” sessions, where you can discuss the book of your choice with its author.

Confirmed authors: Helen Dunmore (The Betrayal), Linda Colley (The Ordeal of Elizabeth Marsh), Max Egremont (Forgotten Land: Journeys Among The Ghosts of East Prussia), Kei Miller (The Last Warner Woman).

2.00-3.00: Panel discussion on history writing and historical fiction

3-3.30: Tea and coffee

3.30-4.30: Small group discussion with the four authors

Admission: Free, but booking required in advance.

Please choose which author’s book you would like to discuss by selecting the appropriate ticket type. All the books should be available cheaply secondhand or from your local library:

1.    Helen Dunmore, The Betrayal

2.    Linda Colley, The Ordeal of Elizabeth Marsh

3.    Max Egremont, Forgotten Land: Journeys Among The Ghosts of East Prussia

4.    Kei Miller, The Last Warner Woman

Centre for Public Engagement

The CPE supports and promotes public engagement with research and teaching across the University. This involves running programmes of public talks and festivals, and helping academics to engage with the public by working with them to attract funding, providing appropriate training and facilitating collaboration with partners outside the University. We share ideas about public engagement with other universities through the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement.
